There are two ways to end up with Discord Nitro that are not a card payment to Discord, and they are routinely confused because shops list them side by side at similar prices. They are not variations of one product. They work differently, they fail differently, and only one of them touches the account you already use.
A Nitro promo code is redeemed on your own account. A Nitro token is a separate account that already has Nitro running on it. Picking the wrong one is the most common avoidable mistake in this category, so this guide covers what each actually is, the eligibility rule that only applies to one of them, and how to decide.
A promo code upgrades the account you already have
A promo code is a promotional offer you claim on your own Discord account. You sign in as yourself, redeem, and your account gains full Nitro for the promotional period. Everything stays where it is — your servers, your friends, your messages, your username.
That is the appeal, and it is a real one. If you want Nitro on the account people already know you by, a promo code is the only one of the two that does it.
The cost of that convenience is that Discord has to agree.
The twelve-month rule, which only applies to codes
An account that has had an active Nitro subscription or a Nitro trial in the last twelve months cannot redeem a Nitro promotion. It is not "not currently subscribed" — it is "not in the last twelve months", and a trial you cancelled months ago still counts.
The rule reaches past full Nitro. Nitro Basic and Nitro Classic count too, even though they are lower tiers. If the code is refused and you cannot think why, subscription history is almost always the answer. We cover the failure messages and the leftover-time trap in detail in the three-month promo guide.
A code also needs a payment method on file
Redeeming a promotion is a claim flow on Discord's side, and it expects a valid virtual credit card or a PayPal account attached before it will complete. The three months are promotional; the payment method is still required to run the claim.
That catches people who assumed a promotional offer meant no billing details at all. It also means the subscription can roll into a paid one when the promotional period ends, so check your renewal settings before it does.
A token is an account with Nitro already on it
A Nitro token is not a code and there is nothing to redeem. It is an aged Discord account that already has Nitro active, handed over as the account's login token. You sign in and the Nitro is simply there.
Because nothing is being claimed, none of the above applies:
- No eligibility check. Your own subscription history is irrelevant — it is not your account being upgraded.
- No payment method. Nothing is attached, so nothing can renew and there is nothing to cancel.
- No redemption to fail. The common failure mode of a code — refused for reasons you cannot see — does not exist here.
When the month or the three months run out, the Nitro ends and the account remains. There is no charge, because there was never a card.
Our 1 Month Nitro Token and 3 Month Nitro Token are both full access, meaning the account's original inbox comes with it. There are also 1 month trial tokens for the cheaper, shorter version.
What you are giving up
A token is a different account. It is not your profile, it has none of your servers, and your friends will not recognise it. If what you wanted was Nitro perks on your own identity, a token does not deliver that no matter how cheap it is.
This is the trade, stated plainly: a code works on your account and might be refused; a token cannot be refused and is not your account.
Which one to buy
Buy a promo code if you want Nitro on your main account, and you are confident that account has had no Nitro, Nitro Basic, Nitro Classic or Nitro trial in the past twelve months. Our 1 month and 3 month promos are the two lengths we stock.
Buy a token if your account has had Nitro recently, you do not want to attach a payment method, you want the features without touching your main profile, or you simply want the thing to work on arrival without an eligibility check standing between you and it.
Buy a trial token if you want to see what Nitro actually changes before committing to anything longer.
The boosts behave differently too
Full Nitro includes two Server Boosts for as long as the subscription runs, on either route. They are attached to the subscription rather than gifted, so they are withdrawn when it ends, and a server you boosted can drop a level at that point if nobody else is boosting it.
The difference is whose boosts they are. A promo code's boosts are on your account and you apply them to servers you are in. A token's boosts belong to that separate account, so the account has to join the server before it can boost it.
What we do and do not promise
Every Nitro product we sell carries a 24 hour warranty term: if it does not work as described, it is replaced or refunded. The refund policy is the full version and it is short.
Two honest caveats, because they are the ones that matter.
Discord's terms of service prohibit transferring accounts. A token is an account that changes hands, and that is against Discord's rules regardless of who sells it or how carefully. The practical risk sits with the account, not with the Nitro — and it is a risk, not a certainty. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.
A promo code's eligibility is Discord's decision, not ours. We can confirm a code is valid and unused. We cannot make Discord accept it on an account that held Nitro Basic in March. That is why the twelve-month rule is the first thing in this guide rather than a footnote.
The short version
A code is for your account and has to pass a check. A token is a working account and has to be a different one. Decide which of those two sentences describes what you actually want, and the choice makes itself.
If you are still unsure what a token is in the first place, what Discord tokens are covers the vocabulary, and buying aged accounts covers what makes one account worth more than another.
